I can’t get over how these blockheads with a joke name like the Mighty Nein can roll into the harshest areas filled to the brim with dangerous scum and cruelly evil bastards, introduce themselves with obviously fake names, then openly call each other by their real names in earshot of everyone, shit in alleys, get wasted, disregard half the things they were told, and stumble into unwinnable situations then pull out walls of fire, summoned demons, stunning truth fists, teleportation, and illusory magic with the final tally ending up overwhelmingly in their favor as they leave town with their enemies feeding the worms. These guys are fucking terrifying. Like, how many top-tier assholes have grossly underestimated what must seem like a crew of clowns to them just to be buried by how powerful they really are? Avantika was flush on her successes and thought they were jokes, and they made her sit in silence as she lost everything. Lorenzo considered them worthless and unworthy of his attention, then had his criminal enterprise torn down on his head. And then I can’t stop thinking about a little bird girl in Hupperdook who’s still alive and has a family again because of them, or the town of Allfield who calls them their heroes, or a blind priest who spreads tales of these folks who constantly delve into the dark to rescue people who need it, and I can’t stop getting misty-eyed. They’re doing it in the craziest and most chaotic way they know how, but the world’s jumped a few notches closer to better because of them.

This last arc is hilarious when you look at the m9′s tactics from an outside perspective, like they literally rolled up to Avantika in Her boat, after killing Her crew, and become pirates out of sheer audacity.

They go on 1 (one) shore mission where fjord actively tries to drown Avantika but plays it off as nothing, seduces and sleeps with her a couple times. They roll up into port for 1 (one) day, steal her evidence, start a fight, and get her killed by pirate king.

Fjord is the only one with ANY experience on a ship

I would ABSOLUTELY believe beau when she says that this was an infiltration mission specifically against Avantika by an order of batman monks, because they pulled it off so well and with almost no casualties, while getting pretty much all the info they needed about the cloven orbs and stuff

But then you the viewer know that these events are the result of accidentally getting spotted trying to SPEAK to a messenger in a port city with no intentions at all, and they’ve been sailing by the seat of their pants the whole fucking time I love dnd

fjordfocused:

the greatest long con in history is Travis Willingham making Fjord’s accent a copy of Vandren’s voice. not only is it a beautiful and heartbreaking character choice that really makes Fjord a great, complex character, but it also means

Matt Mercer is eventually going to play Vandren with that voice

Matt Mercer gonna have to come on camera and use a deep-fried southern drawl and you know what that’s gonna sound like

you already know what that’s gonna sound like

The fact that Avantika’s silver tongue finally became her undoing… It’s so fitting.

The deeper you dig your pit of lies, the further you descend. And it was already deep, much deeper than the depths of her patron.

And yet… when faced with death, not a single lie or half-truth could save her. All she could do was look away in defiance, despite knowing that she was already broken and her fate was already sealed.

Her silence damned her, because it’s just as much a means of protection as it is a death sentence.

And all because while she was busy with Fjord and trying to use him as a tool for her goals, she wasn’t as focused on the rest of the group. She also woefully underestimated Beauregard of the Cobalt Soul, a woman whose directive as a fledgling expositor was given to her by her mentor Dairon: “Weed out the corrupt, pursue the secrets and evils of the world and expose them to the light, twist the arm of the unjust until they spill their mysteries.”

And I think in that moment, Beauregard truly understood who she was and what she was fighting for: she is a spy, a hunter, a watchman to those who rule. She is not kind. She is forthright, She is truth.

And Avantika realized at that moment that she fucked up. But it was already over. She didn’t even get a chance to object as Beau gave her own. She didn’t because while Beau stated that she acts as a neutral party loyal only to the Expositors, her true allegiance still lies with the Mighty Nein, her second family.

And no one fucks with family. Not even a fanatical pirate captain.
