night-filled-mountain:

The difference between the dodecahedron heist and last night is that, impulsive and wonderfully ridiculous and improbably successful though it was, at least the M9 actually wanted the dodecahedron. They carried out every step of that heist with the specific goal of obtaining it. Whereas there was no point last night when they had any desire whatsoever to steal a ship.

Beau only boarded the ship to try and get Marius back and salvage their original goal (…which, just to review, was: “Have a conversation with this dude” 😂). Then the remaining pirates started attacking her, and her teammates started boarding to help her out. From the beginning of that battle almost to the end, hardly a turn passed when someone wasn’t like, “We should run away” or “I’ll hold them off, everyone else run away!” or “How are we going to get out of here!?”

And then they realized in total disbelief that they were winning, most of the pirates were dead, the dude they just wanted to talk to now considered them kidnappers and ruthless killers, and the law was on their heels. So they just…stole a ship. Accidentally. They accidentally slaughtered a ship’s entire crew, kidnapped a guy, and stole the ship right out from under the noses of the law, just barely managing to haul a wayward teammate out of the monster-infested water in the process. And guys, I could barely watch the second half of last night’s episode, I was horrified by the clusterfuck that simply would not stop increasing in clusterfuckery with every passing second…but in retrospect, how could the Mighty Nein visit the Menagerie Coast and not become accidental pirates? How did we not all see this coming a mile away?
