Sometimes I forget for one second how Eurocentric and even explicitly anti indigenous curriculum is and then I’m violently thrust back into the reality that indigenous knowledge is for the most part seen as pretty much useless by most people, certainly not sophisticated or scholarly or something that NEEDS to be studied
and that’s too bad because it’s far more interesting that most of what’s taught in school. europe has different countries and cultures, but the indigenous americans literally had thousands of different languages and every tribe a unique history. plus, native folklore is one of my favorite things to read and learn about.
have* we’re still here!! We still exist and we have an enormous diversity of languages and living cultures!
That’s another issue: native people always being talked about in a past tense giving the implication we no longer exist. It’s always “The Native Americans did/had”. Adding a past tense to our cultures and people is just further erasure
And about the original subject – my history teacher once said that the French were the first occupants in Canada. That’s how goddamn colonized my school was. Didn’t even mention natives, because ya know apparently we’re relics of the past and therefore not important at all – certainly not important enough to mention anyway
