So I was in a conversation with someone about the way customers treat and view customer service workers like they’re just appliances to be used and not as the people they are.
And then I remembered something that happened some years ago. I was injured on some broken equipment and for a good three months I was only able to do tasks that I could manage with only my uninjured hand. This pretty much restricted me to nothing but cleaning. So I spent the time cleaning a different part of the store every day but every week or so they’d put me back in my actual work area to clean there. The problem was that customers would keep expecting me to serve them when I was back there and become angry when I didn’t despite my perfectly valid reasons.
Finally out of frustration and somewhat joking I took the “Out of Order” sign we used for the coffee machine and hung it around my neck.
…it fucking worked. Customers suddenly acted like I didn’t exist.
Yeah. If that’s not evidence I don’t know what is.
